Kala Vatana sabzi (dried black peas)

It is a good source of dietary fibre,vitamins and proteins.Popularly cooked as usal, sabzi or added in pulav recipes .

Dish name: Kala vatana sabzi(dried black peas)

What we need:

  • vatana-1 cup,soaked overnight
  • oil-1/4 cup
  • onion-1 big finely chopped
  • tomatoes-2 medium size,finely chopped
  • ginger garlic paste-1/2 tsp
  • curry leaves-6-7
  • coriander-cumin powder-1/2 tsp
  • turmeric powder-1/2 tsp
  • red chilli powder-1 tsp
  • salt to taste
  • sabzi masala powder/garam masala powder- 1/2 tsp
  • coriander leaves- 4 tbsp chopped
  • water

How we make:

Pressure cook the  vatanas with salt till tender soft and keep it ready.

  • Take a kadhai,add oil into it
  • Once the oil is ready add the curry leaves
  • Now add onions,ginger garlic paste and saute well
  • when onions turn pinkish,you can add turmeric,coriander-cumin powder,red chilli powder and give a quick stir to the mixture
  • After 3-4 mins add the tomatoes and little water to evenly cook tomatoes with spices.
  • Once oil leaves the sides of kadhai,its time to add vatanas and the its juices to the masala
  • Adjust water quantity if u want to make gravy like consistency
  • Add salt and garam masala powder,but remember when we boiled vatana a little of salt was already added to it
  • Now close the lid and cook for 10 mins till all  the masala nicely mixes with juices released by the vatanas
  • Garnish with coriander leaves before serving

Total time spent: 45-50 mins

Its tasty and a healthy recipe and accompanies well with puri or chapatis
